Downlighting is the more common technique and is achieved by orienting lights above to shine down on objects such as pathways, driveways, stairs and decks. The light comes from above, as from the moon or sun and its effect is to look natural. The most dramatic way of downlighting is to mount canister-shaped lights near the top of a large tree or group of trees. The down lighting softly washes the plants, showing them in their natural form and using them as a frame for the columns and fountain.

The light that streams down through the cover mimics diffused light from the moon and casts interesting shadows on the ground. Use three fixtures for large tree, set at different angles to achieve the most balanced light. Downlightings is also the most effective way to light a path or walkway. There's nothing worse when trying to navigate a path, than being blinded by harsh spots of light. To avoid this, use lights with top covers or shades that direct the light out and down but not up. This creates wide circles of softly diffused light that illuminate the ground only. Down lighting mimics the natural light. The fixture is located overhead with the light shining down from above.

Down lighting is a good option if the steps have surrounding vegetation which you want to illuminate; it's not so effective if you want to create small, tightly controlled areas of lighting. It imitates natural light and adds a nice touch to these areas. It is recommended as an effective and affordable method for security lighting. To light a pathway, mount smaller luminaries near the ground.

Down lights are offered in several finishes like Brushed Nickel, Black, White, and Polished Brass. Decorative glass trims are available in Cobalt Blue, Amber and White. It is used with smaller ornamental trees to cast light around the base or through the tree with the fixture. Add a pale blue or mercury vapour lens to create a moonlight effect.
