" Silhouette Back Lighting "

Backlighting or silhouette lighting, provides a special effect by illuminating a fairly large surface like a wall using a wash light fixture. This causes objects in front of the lighting to appear as silhouettes. The opposite of shadowing, this outdoor lighting technique can be very dramatic. Lights positioned behind and below the object to create a spectacular silhouette. Silhouetting is the creation of a dark outline of an object by lighting a wall or surface behind it. Backlighting is one of the most basic types of inspection lighting. A back light provides a field of even illumination against which the part is viewed as a silhouette for measuring, sorting, or determining the orientation of parts.

The back lighting of trees is a common misinterpretation of this effect; if there is no illuminated background then there is no silhouette. Back lighting produces a halo of light around the edges of the plant or trunk of a tree. Back Lighting is keeping the light fittings behind the plant to which you want to light. Silhouetting creates an altogether moodier effect. Often used to highlight the outline of large plants such as trees or palms or structures such as archways, luminaries are mounted behind and below the object to create a spectacular silhouette.

Backlighting can also be used to create a variation on silhouetting to bring out the colors of leaves on trees such as maples. Silhouetting lights the surface behind an object for a striking effect. Use spots, floods or in-ground fixtures. Lighted tress in the background of a forested area creates silhouettes in the foreground.

Silhouetting or back lighting adds a dramatic effect when lights are projected onto a wall or flat vertical surface from directly behind an interesting object or an exceptionally shaped plant or shrubbery. The light source should be concealed on the ground directly behind the object being silhouetted. This type of lighting achieves special effects and subtle architectural integration. Stunning effects can be achieved by backlighting the trees, plants, statues etc.
